In 2022, the Dutch Banking Association attracted media attention on several occasions. This page sets out the most notable news from 2022.

February

Sanctions against Russia
Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the NVB has received many media enquiries about how banks implement the sanctions policy. The NVB speaks on BNR news radio to explain the role of banks in sanctions.

March

Money Week
A successful opening of Money Week by Her Majesty Queen Máxima. The Nederlands Dagblad reports that bank employees will be giving guest lectures in classrooms at secondary schools during this week. A new aspect this time around is that the banks also plan to reach out to young people in secondary and senior secondary vocational schools with their teaching programs.

Entrepreneurs and cash
In March, the Financieele Dagblad devotes several features to the role of cash in business. According to the newspaper, businesses are becoming “desperate” as banks want to greatly reduce or even ban cash transactions to reduce money laundering risks.

Publication of fraud figures
Payment fraud figures are in the media spotlight, with coverage in the Telegraaf, ANP and on NU.nl, among others.

May

Launch of ‘certificate of inheritance’ checklist
Plusonline and the Consumentenbond are covering a new tool on their website which helps customers determine when they need a certificate of inheritance to gain access to a deceased relative’s bank account.

August

Nitrogen debate
Various media outlets (AD, NOS, ANP) report in late August that the nitrogen debate between ministers and Dutch banks has led to no more than good intentions. According to nitrogen debate leader Johan Remkes, the banks do however have a good sense of responsibility on this subject. “They want to participate in the transition needed in agriculture and are willing to smooth the way. However, they cannot afford to become a charity.”

September

ATM attacks
Several news websites share an article about the number of ATM attacks being on the rise; there were more ATM attacks in the first 9 months of 2022 than in all of 2021. The NVB is mentioned in the article.

FATCA
The decision by banks not to close bank accounts of “incidental Americans” in response to a letter from the US Treasury leads to factual reporting in NRC and FD.

October

Campaign ‘Fraud. This is how it works!’
De Telegraaf reports on the news published by the NVB that bank fraudsters are changing tactics more and more quickly. Fraudsters are becoming more inventive and take advantage of current events.

Legislative proposal on money laundering
Medy van der Laan is a guest on BNR’s Zakendoen met. Among other things, she speaks about the importance of the legislative proposal Plan van aanpak Witwassen (Money laundering action plan).

November

Digital euro
The Reformatorisch Dagblad highlights the NVB’s news release on the digital euro: “The possibility of a digital euro should be properly researched before any decisions are made on what form such a currency should take. The NVB calls for that research to be done.”

December

Money laundering action plan
The NOS reports that the government wants the payment system to be better monitored. In the fight against crime, the government wants to give banks the ability to jointly monitor transactions above 100 euros.
